Brakes Squeaking or Grinding? A Troubleshooting Guide
Brake noise is the most common reason drivers come into our Poplar workshop. Here's a clear guide to what each sound means.
Light squeal in the morning
Often just surface rust on the discs after the car has sat overnight in damp weather. Usually goes within 2–3 stops. Not a problem unless it persists all day.
Constant high-pitched squeal when braking
Two main causes:
1. Brake dust between pad and disc — annoying but harmless
2. Wear indicator — a small metal tab on the pad that scrapes the disc when pads are nearly worn out. Time for replacement within a few weeks.
Grinding or scraping noise
Stop driving and book in. This usually means the pads have worn down to the metal backing and are grinding the disc. Two consequences:
Pulsing or vibration through the pedal
Warped discs. Heat cycling over years can cause this. Solution: new discs and pads. Often £200–£400 fitted per axle.
Soft or spongy pedal
Not a noise issue but worth mentioning. Usually air in the brake lines or old, moisture-saturated brake fluid. A brake fluid flush every 2 years prevents this.
What we'll do
Free brake inspection at our Poplar workshop. We measure pad thickness and disc condition, then quote clearly. No upsell — if the brakes are fine, we'll tell you.
