Failed Your MOT? Here's What to Do Next

17 May 20265 min read

Failing an MOT is stressful but rarely the end of the world. Here's exactly what to do next.

Can you drive a car with a failed MOT?

Only in two cases:

1. If the existing MOT certificate is still valid (you tested early)

2. To a pre-booked repair appointment

In all other cases, driving on a failed MOT means no valid MOT — and your insurance is void.

Understand the fail reasons

The MOT certificate lists every fault as either:

  • Dangerous — must not be driven
  • Major — must be fixed for retest
  • Minor / Advisory — recommended, not required
  • Read this carefully. Sometimes a "major" is a £20 bulb, not a £500 job.

    Free retest rules

If the garage that tested your car also does the repairs:

  • Same-day free partial retest for many items (brake lights, wipers, etc.)
  • Within 10 working days: free partial retest if you take it back
  • After 10 days: full retest fee again
  • Common cheap fixes

  • Bulbs (£15–£40 fitted)
  • Wiper blades (£20–£60)
  • Tyre tread (varies)
  • Number plate condition (£15)
  • When to get a second opinion

If the fail looks expensive (suspension, emissions, bodywork), get a second quote. A genuine garage will be happy to inspect for free.
