High-Mileage Car Servicing: A Guide for Private-Hire and Delivery Drivers
Why standard service intervals do not apply
Most manufacturer intervals (often 12,000 miles or every 12 months) are written for private cars driven 8,000 miles a year. If you drive for a living, the oil, brakes and consumables wear out at three to four times that rate.
Following manufacturer intervals on a private-hire car is the single biggest reason high-mileage cars break down before they should.
A realistic schedule for working cars
| Mileage | Job |
|--------|------|
| Every 6,000 mi | Interim service — oil, oil filter, top-ups, visual checks |
| Every 12,000 mi | Full service — air filter, plugs (petrol), pollen filter |
| Every 24,000 mi | Major service — fuel filter, brake fluid, gearbox check |
| Every 40,000 mi | Coolant change, suspension inspection |
| Every 60–80k mi | Timing belt and water pump (where fitted) |

What we focus on for high-mileage cars
At our Poplar workshop we treat working cars differently from weekend cars. That means quicker turnaround, OE-quality consumables, written advisories so you can plan, and honest conversations about what can wait.
