MOT for PCO and Private-Hire Drivers in East London: What to Expect

1 June 20266 min read

Why PCO and private-hire MOTs matter more

If your car is your income, an MOT failure is more than an inconvenience — it costs you shifts. Most private-hire drivers in East London put on serious mileage, and the parts that wear fastest (brakes, tyres, suspension, emissions kit) are exactly the things MOTs scrutinise.

We are a DVSA-authorised MOT station in Poplar, E14 — five minutes from Canary Wharf — and we test plenty of Uber, Bolt and minicab vehicles each week. Here is what to expect.

What the MOT actually checks

  • Brakes — pads, discs, handbrake balance and ABS warning behaviour.
  • Tyres — tread depth, sidewall damage, age and correct sizes across axles.
  • Suspension — bushes, drop links, shocks (a very common high-mileage failure point).
  • Lights — headlights, indicators, fogs, brake lights, number-plate lights, alignment.
  • Emissions — diesel DPF, petrol lambda, smoke and CO/HC limits.
  • Body and structure — corrosion in load-bearing areas, sharp edges, mirror damage.
  • Common reasons private-hire cars fail

    1. Worn front brakes — high mileage in stop-start traffic eats pads and discs quickly.

    2. Tyres just under 1.6mm — easy to miss on the inside edge if alignment is off.

    3. Failed bulbs — particularly rear fogs and number-plate lights.

    4. Suspension knock — drop links and anti-roll bar bushes are the usual culprits.

    5. Diesel DPF / EGR faults — short stop-start runs cause regen issues over time.

How to keep your work car MOT-ready

  • Book an interim service every 6,000–10,000 miles so wear items are caught early.
  • Walk around the car once a week — check all lights, tyre tread and look for fluid drips.
  • Don't ignore a warning light — diagnose it before it becomes an MOT advisory.
  • Book your MOT a month early — that way any work needed can be done without missing shifts.
  • What we do differently for private-hire drivers

  • Honest advisories — we tell you what is genuinely failing vs nice to have.
  • Same-day work where parts are in stock — minimising days off the road.
  • WhatsApp updates so you can plan around the job.
  • Fair pricing on consumables like pads, discs and tyres.
  • We do not perform official TfL licensing checks, but we will make sure your car passes the MOT side cleanly and is genuinely roadworthy for the work it does.
