When Is My MOT Due? How to Check Your MOT Expiry Date

10 April 20264 min read

Your MOT certificate has an expiry date — and if you miss it, you could face a fine, invalidate your insurance, or even have your car seized. Here's how to stay on top of it.

How to Check Your MOT Expiry

The quickest way is to use the government's free MOT checker at gov.uk. All you need is your vehicle registration number. It will show you:

  • When your current MOT expires
  • The results of previous MOT tests
  • Any advisories from your last test
  • You can also find the date on your last MOT certificate, your V5C logbook reminder, or your insurer's records.

Can I Get My MOT Done Early?

Yes. You can have your MOT carried out up to one calendar month before it expires without losing any days. Your new certificate will run from the old expiry date, not from the date of the test.

This is worth doing — it gives you time to sort any repairs if your vehicle doesn't pass first time.

What Happens If I Drive Without a Valid MOT?

Driving without a valid MOT is illegal (unless you're driving directly to a pre-booked MOT appointment). You could face:

  • A fine of up to £1,000
  • Your insurance may be void
  • If stopped, your vehicle could be seized
  • Don't risk it. Set a reminder a month before your MOT is due and get it booked in.
